In this interview, Shanita Jones explains her 10 year journey to building up her bookkeeping and tax business to eventually quit her lucrative full-time accounting job.

- Best part: SHANITA! Y’all, if you are invisioning a grumpy, nerdy accountant, you are wrong. Shanita’s personality and heart for her clients and for other beginning entrepreneurs shines through. Lots of laughs. Lots of SHOOTING STRAIGHT with the WHOLE truth about her journey.
- She is vulnerable about some of the struggles, including being a teenage mom and having to get her GED and how there were many years of just gritting it out to accomplish this goal.
- She gives great business advice. Loyalty to clients. Referral program. How she partners with other people in this industry to create win/win situations.
- She does not describe some easy, strolling path to this. Talks about working 80 hour weeks. Talks about missing soccer games. Talks about some health issues. I really appreciate it because if it is one thing I try to preach to people is that this line of work and building a business is NOT EASY. I want everyone who thinks it is and who isn’t willing to ensure they have a big brain to LEAVE THIS Bookkeeping Side Hustle community and go some place else because we are not selling any magic, easy-money elixir here.
- She is generous with her practical advice. She says which thought-leaders in the industry that she follows. She talks about the EA vs the CPA. She talks about how she uses technology to improve her clients interactions. I particularly loved her tip about creating videos in Loom and going over all the financial statements BEFORE her monthly debrief call with her clients and that she won’t have the meeting with them if they haven’t watched the video. She calls them out on it if they try to skip the video. But it is such a better way for them to get their information. Brilliant!
