Best YouTube Channels for Bookkeepers

Best YouTube Channels For Bookkeepers, Accountants, Tax Pros.

YouTube is a treasure trove of great content for you, the bookkeeping side hustler.

Even if you are a book learner, you need to learn to consume video content.  Let me tell you why.  NO ONE is writing books for the cloud-based accounting software applications any more.  Because by the time a book is written, the software developers have gone and dang changed something.

So how are you going to consume this vast array of excellent content?  Some need to be watched with your eyeballs.   But if your life is at all like mine, you don’t always have the luxury, so I don’t let the fact that I can’t watch them with my actual eyeballs stop me.  If I hear something that I know I need to watch, you can always go back a few seconds and watch what you need to.

So, again, how are you going to consume this content?

  • At the gym? Lately I’m a stair master gal myself.  And I actually start playing my selected YouTube video (or podcast) before I leave my house for the gym which gives me a good few extra minutes.
  • In place of your normal TV steaming? Make a resolution to watch 30 minutes of professional content before you zone out with Friends episodes (WAIT!  Friends isn’t on Nexflix anymore!!! ☹)
  • While cooking dinner, folding laundry, mowing the yard?
  • While commuting?

So without further ado, click the titles below to check out the channels.

Note: when I write out their “focus”, those descriptions are as I interpret them, with an eye for how my particular reading audience will best benefit.  The actual creator might not describe their channel that way.  But the descriptions are meant to help you sift through the list to find the producer that you need.

YouTube For Bookkeepers and Accountants

Focus:  Getting started, General Bookkeeping Industry Advice, Bookkeeping Course Reviews, Product Advice, Encouragement

I will first start with my own Bookkeeping Side Hustle YouTube channel.  😉 This is not a technical channel, but it is a great channel for the person (you) who wants to start to build a business/career/income around virtual bookkeeping.  Think of my channel as high-level guide through the ins and outs of getting started in this industry.  And please subscribe!  My goal for 2020 is 500 YouTube subscribers.  It is one of the ways listed here on in this article of ways you can say “thanks” to me.  Free!

Focus:  Anything related to Intuit (which is just the parent company of all products called QuickBooks), technical software questions, general and technical accounting topics, building a business, very deep industry knowledge.

And firstly number 2, I’ve got to lead off with my very first YouTube love, my first accounting YouTuber who I consider a critical component to the early success in building my business, the illustrious Hector Garcia.  As a new bookkeeper in QuickBooks Online, I would immediately head to his channel when I had a questions and search for my problem and Hector almost always had an answer.  There is probably no more prolific accounting YouTuber out there.

Focus:  Pricing.  He’s got more topics, but start with him for your pricing questions.

Every new bookkeeping side hustler eventually faces that moment with they go “Ahh!  What do I charge?!?!”.  Consume Mark’s pricing content as you are taking your initial steps in building your business so your mind starts to understand the pricing fundamentals and trends in this industry.  Then you’ll be better prepared when you get that first client.

Focus: QuickBooks ONLINE (not other Intuit products), lots of app knowledge, often includes his community in his videos.

Seth has come on my radar in the last few months.  As I wrote above, Hector was my first YouTube love, but as I’ve gotten to know Hector he told me that Seth is the best QBO trainer out there.  So, since I listen to what Hector says and since I happen to work in QBO, I checked him out.  Seth is putting out more and more content.  He does deep dives into apps that he uses, too, which I’m trying to pay more attention to because I know all the great ones have their preferred “tech stack” (ohh…those words still make want to run and hide…but I’m getting there).  A unique aspect of his content is that quite a bit of it is very communal.  He invites people to join weekly zoom calls.  Are you looking for knowledge AND community?  Wanna show your kids your face on YouTube?   Check out Seth David and Nerd Enterprises.

Focus:  More advanced accounting and business topics.  Skewed toward being Xero heavy, though it is not exclusive to Xero.

Now this isn’t a free resource like the ones on YouTube, but the monthly subscription is a steal. Most of the trainings that are in the Learning Library cost a pretty penny if you take them live, but you can listen to everything after the fact for only $19 a month.  I have a full review here where I point out some of the videos that I think are particularly of interest to the bookkeeping side hustler.  If you are considering using Xero and want some great technical training from some of the earliest adopters of Xero, my advice is to buy a month’s subscription to this and do all the Xero modules.  The list of courses is being added to often, so keep coming and checking it out.  Then binge watch.

Focus:  General industry trends by legit industry leaders, dorky dad jokes, skews toward Intuit products.  You will increase in professional stature just by being in the same orbit as these guys.

So, the best way to watch these videos is to watch the live stream in their FaceBook Group late on Friday nights, but you can also find them on YouTube if you dig through Hector’s channel.  If you are on the fence about this industry because you think it might be boring, then grab a beer and settle in on your couch late on Friday nights and join the conversation.  They aren’t boring.  And they are sharp.  And I got to be on his Friday Night Live Accountants show once!  What!

Focus:  Literally any topic you could imagine wanting to learn about.

So I’ve heard SkillShare called “Netflix for Business”.  Do you need a whole suite of training in entrepreneurship AND accounting AND software?  Think of it as business school at your fingertips, except instead of costing 10s of thousands of dollars to go to business school, you can get 2 months of unlimited streaming for free.  And there are no group projects.  There is even an app so you can easily consume the courses on your phone.

Focus:  Technical Xero channel.

Since I work in QBO, I don’t follow this channel regularly, but it is where I would go if I was a Xero user (are you going to be a Xero use…you should consider it) and got stuck with a head scratching problem.  This channel is full of short, practical videos on very specific topics.

Focus:  Accounting apps with a Xero bent.

She used to put more Xero material out, but  her material is more app based and business development based now.  Perhaps she is will be the accounting influencer you want to follow.  Australian with purple hair.  Not your typical accountant, right?

Now, if you’ve read this far, there is one gaping hole in this list for this audience.  I am looking for the best, best, best accounting teacher on YouTube.  Anyone good?  Or are they all behind a paywall?  Anything on Udemy for a deal?  Chime in below or come tag me in a post on the Bookkeeping Side Hustle FaceBook group and let me know who is the best accounting fundamentals teacher.
